Kumbira Turns 30: Cagayan de Oro’s Longest-Running Culinary Showdown Celebrates Three Decades

or 30 years, Kumbira has done more than crown culinary champions. It has shaped the food and hospitality identity of Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao, one competition at a time.

This year, the Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (COHARA) marks that milestone with a fitting theme: Three Decades, One Culinary Legacy. The anniversary celebration runs October 14 to 16, 2026, at the Atrium, Limketkai Mall.

From a City Proclamation to the Country's Longest-Running Culinary Competition

Kumbira's roots go back to June 4, 1996, when then Mayor Pablo "Ambing" Magtajas signed City Proclamation No. 01-96, declaring the last week of August as Cultural and Culinary Week. By 2005, the Cagayan de Oro City Council had cemented the tradition further, passing a resolution that officially declared the third week of August as KUMBIRA Week.

What began as a local initiative has since grown into the longest-running live culinary competition in the Philippines, and the largest culinary show outside Metro Manila. It now brings together schools, industry partners, suppliers, exhibitors, and a professional network built over three decades.

A Journey Across Iconic Venues

Kumbira's history is tied closely to the venues that hosted it. The competition began in 1996 at the Grand Ballroom of Pryce Plaza, set on the hills overlooking the city. In 2003, it moved to the Atrium of Limketkai Mall, where it remained the event's home for more than two decades until 2025.

Sinuglaw, Regional Pride, and National Recognition

In 2004, COHARA introduced the Sinuglaw Festival alongside the 8th Kumbira, a celebration that blends sinugba and kinilaw with native ingredients like tabon-tabon and suwa to highlight the city's distinct local flavors. The festival was revived in 2010 as part of the city's Charter Day celebrations.

Kumbira has also served as a launchpad for Northern Mindanao talent on the national stage. Since partnering with the National Food Showdown in 2008, winning teams from regional rounds have gone on to compete in Manila, with schools like Liceo de Cagayan University and establishments like The VIP Hotel bringing home national gold and bronze titles.

Adapting Through Crisis, Then Coming Back Stronger

Perhaps no edition tested Kumbira's resilience more than 2021. At the height of the pandemic, COHARA pulled off the 25th Kumbira entirely online, connecting contestants from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao at a time when in-person gatherings were impossible. It was proof that the tradition could adapt without losing its purpose.

More Than a Cooking Contest

Over three decades, Kumbira has grown into something bigger than a competition. It has become a platform for raising industry standards through mentorship, professional judging, and structured learning. It gives Mindanao's native ingredients and culinary talent a stage to shine on. Through the BIMP-EAGA theme connecting Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, it has even opened doors to Halal culinary categories and cross-border opportunities across Southeast Asia.

The event has also kept pace with emerging trends, from technical masterclasses in modern cake decorating to community outreach programs like Tilaw food tastings, and more recently, a growing spotlight on the region's specialty coffee industry.

Looking Ahead

As Kumbira enters its 30th year, it carries the weight of three decades of history while continuing to push Cagayan de Oro's culinary scene forward. The October 14 to 16 celebration at the Atrium, Limketkai Mall promises to honor that legacy while setting the stage for whatever comes next.
